Zombie time!

Want to see more of the costumes I make, follow me on facebook: "Chrixdesignandprops"

I love zombies as much as the next girl and can not pass on an opertunety to dress up. Warm bodies is featured soon and Banzaicon is around the bend. I want to make a torn jaw, exposed teeth mask.

The idea is to make this in two stages, the torn flesh I will make on application day, but the exposed teeth I can make now (saving time on application day)

First up, teeth, which are made from fake nails and cut into shape.

Precut and aligned

Next step - latex. Here I have stippled liquid latex (69 kr at Standard, like this one) over the area I want my mask to cover (sorry for bad quality mobile photos, best I had at the moment)

And layer up with toilet paper and cover it with latex again. Let it dry.

Same with upper jaw

Adding teet, which are glued on with spirit gum (also known as mastix)

More teeth

Gums. If you look closely on this picture you will see that i have added more texture above and between the teeth, creating gums and securing the teeth.

Paint job
I used thick acryllic paint, which gives a a wet look and is cheap. Red and brown are mixed here.

And darker brown around the edges.

Full front. An ekstra nail is added to the chin as to create the effect of exposed jaw bone, buildt up with extra tissue around the edges.

Take it off and I have a reusable mask. And it is easier to finish detailing it.

A little more detailing, painting under and between the teeth. And making some brown strikes on the teeth itself.

This is all for now. When the time comes that I will wear it I will add more fake blood, but it is easier to store when it is dry and clean like now. To apply it later I will use more latex or spirit gum. It is important that the area around the mouth is attached thoroughly. The edges however will be covered with more fake skin - but more on that in my next tutorial.

See my next post on how to make the rest of the makeup

  1. Sorry if this is a dumb question...I am new to this stuff.
Can you open your mouth with this?...Is it possible to drink?...

    1. Hi, no problem, I'm happy to answer. Yes, you can open your mouth, drink through a straw and even chew (I had some candy and fries while wearing this). The trick is that it has to sit thoroughly on your face, if it comes loose it is not so easy. But the first time you make it, it sits really well. And if you want to reuse it just make sure you glue it on good. A last tip is to make sure the teeth are glued on really well, or you might knock them off when drinking or eating. Have fun

  2. Is it possible to take this off before painting it at all, or do you need the extra stiffness from the paint?
I only have oil paint at home and thought I'd try this. And make it a few weeks before using it of course.

    1. Should be no problem taking it off and then paint it. I painted a little bit extra on mine after I took it off. Good luck, love to see what you end up with :)

    2. I think I'm going to try on a small piece of my arm first, and maybe use 2-4 layers of paper instead of one.
T bad it hurts like hell pulling liquid latex of your skin xP

Will post on my blog when done^^

  3. Hi how do you make do this without talking off the mask? Lets say I wanna just do it all in 1 day..how can I make the skin appear like its open? Btw you did a great job!

    1. Then I would first make the torn skin: http://chrixdesign.blogspot.no/2013/03/zombie-part-two.html

And then carefully add more latex, paper and teeth with the "torn flesh hole" and paint everything in the end. You might want to use a piece of tape or something to hold back the "flesh flaps" so they are not in the way while putting the rest on.

      Hope it works ^^

    1. Hi, in theory I only used "one" layer, but I used a thick (3 layer) paper and added more where needed, like the nose and the chin. So you could say it is 4 thin layers. Yes, mine got a bit stiff, but I think that is due to the acryllic paint, that layer is also a bit thick. I don't think I used any special latex, it was very runny though.

But I would think a softer mask is more comfortable :) Happy Halloween

  7. Hi Chrix!!! I loved this, thank you so much! But how do you take it off of your face without ripping it? I've never worked with liquid latex before so idk what will happen...

    1. Latex a very durable, it is after all the stuff condoms are made of. So if you have the tissue paper all comvered in latex, it will not tear easily. Just be careful when you take it off, a little by little :) Also it will pull out all you hair, maybe shave (I do) and it won't hurt so much.

    1. Hi, I just sent you a more elaborate answer on email. But to sum up:
-Tissue paper and skin glue (pros aid as it is tacky would be the best)
      - gelatin ,molded to get bite wounds and such
      - gelatin, spread out over a smooth surface can be used to create skin flaps
      - silicone, used directly on skin to build up effects
      - Collodium, to make scar effects
      - plain makeup, there are several very good makeup tutorials for zombies where there are nothing extra effect makeup used than ordinary makeup

Good luck too all of you for Halloween.

    1. I buy it from a local store in Oslo, but I know coscraft.co.uk sell both latex and glue :)

  10. Did you apply liquid latex on your lips? If so does it irritate them or hurt when you remove it?

  11. AMAZING! How clever using nails.

  12. This is so cool! I can't wait to try it.

  13. What can I use if I don't have any nails?

    1. Cut out teeth from a white platonic container (like yogurt of ice cream) :)

  14. What if you have facial hair? Would there be another technique to not have the hair ripped off when taken off?

    SvarSlett
    Svar
    1. You could make it as a flat mold (on a piece on non stick plastic) then apply it yo your self with medical adhesive, then you could remove it with the proper glue remover (if you do it slow enough that shouldn't pull on any hairs). Down side is that the latex mask might not fit perfectly to your face.
You should also shave close before applying anything you face, as it will sit better on your face then. Hope this helps.

    2. Can I also use Vasline?

      Slett
    3. If you use vaseline before adding the latex or skinglue then I don't think the latex og glue will adhere to your skin :/ Using vaseline when removing latex might make it less painful (but haven't tried)

    4. Also can this be used for prosthetics too?

      Slett
    5. to remove prosthetics? I would rather recommend using the glue remover that matches the type of glue you are using (I use Pros aide glue and remove it with ProClean and doing it slowly does not hurt my skin or pull my hair)
